NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A New Orleans police officer died Wednesday after he was struck by a truck while standing on the side of Interstate 10.
Officer George Tessier, 37, was on traffic detail escorting a tractor-trailer rig when a truck veered off the road and struck him during a chain-reaction accident, police said.
Tessier was standing between his patrol car and the 18-wheeler when he was hit by the truck. The impact sent him flying into the trees on the side of the road, police said.
The driver of the truck was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
The accident closed the highway for several hours. No charges were filed, but an investigation was continuing.
Tessier had been with the New Orleans Police Department for 10 years.
