Phoenix Police Officer Killed in Collision

09/10/2002

A Phoenix Police Department motorcycle officer was killed in a traffic collision Tuesday afternoon near 7th Street and Thunderbird Road, a police spokesman said.

Wayne Scott, a 10-year veteran of the Phoenix police force, was taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police department spokesman Tony Morales said the officer was struck by a blue Mercedes. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a 26-year-old man, who suffered some injuries.

“There is nothing to indicate any kind of impairment on his part,” Morales said referring to the driver of the Mercedes. “It’s one of those terrible things.”

Scott was a drug detection specialist with the department.

A cross bearing the name of another Phoenix police officer who was killed near the same intersection, stands about 100 feet from Tuesday’s accident scene. Officer Patrick Briggs was killed in the early 1990s.

Scott is survived by his wife, Alissa, who is six months pregnant.

The 100 Club has set up an account at the Arizona Federal Credit Union to help Scott’s family with expenses. The account number is 468-900. You can also donate online by visiting www.100club.org.
