Happy New Year, my brothers and sisters. Let’s start off the year 2014 with something we’ve been watching for as long as we’ve been together: New and interesting concealed handcuff keys.
According to my email pen pals — who have been sending this thing to me for the past couple of weeks — the Shomer Tec Titanium Escape Ring “features a saw blade and handcuff shim pick combo tool that cannot be seen when worn is perfect for survival kits and can be helpful to aid in captivity escape.”
That’s all well and good if/when you’re a corporate executive taken hostage in a foreign land, but when worn on the finger of a bad guy you’ve placed into custody, this tool may have negative consequences.
“As the ring is worn on your finger,” says one website selling this thing, “it is perfectly positioned for quick access and use, even if you are handcuffed. Single lock handcuffs can be opened using the shim while the saw blade feature can be used to cut zip-ties, duct-tape, disposable handcuffs, plastic zip ties, or other non-metal bondage devices.”
I’ll withhold comment on the inclusion of “non-metal bondage devices” in that list.
Actually, no, I won’t: isn’t that what the “safe word” is for!?
In all seriousness, this looks to be a very valuable piece of kit for a good guy stuck in a bad situation. But we need to think about when things are reversed. When a bad guy is in custody — we’d all agree that’s a good situation — we need to be sure that this type of device doesn’t come into play.
Be careful my friends. Have a safe and successful 2014.
