SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — An off-duty Sandy police officer was injured Wednesday night when his motorcycle struck a Midvale police car that had its lights and sirens blaring.s

The Midvale SWAT officer was responding to a call of a barricaded man just after 7 p.m. when the bike hit his Dodge Intrepid on the 10600 South overpass above Interstate 15, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Preston Raban said.

Veteran Sandy Officer Jason Weiss was riding his personal motorcycle north off I-15 and turning west onto 10600 South when the bike and his left leg struck the right front side of the police car.

The Midvale officer, whose name wasn’t released, was driving east and turning north onto I-15. Raban said the Midvale officer had stopped at the red light and looked in both directions, then was moving forward when the motorcycle hit the car.

Weiss was traveling with the speed of traffic through a green light when the collision occurred. He suffered a broken leg and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, Raban said.

Neither officer is expected to be cited, Raban said.
