SAN FRANCISCO — A man arrested in the knife attack of a police officer at San Francisco International Airport Tuesday was identified as a 64-year-old homeless man.
Dooris Johnston was jailed on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer and threats to commit violence following the afternoon confrontation, officials said Wednesday.
The officer, identified as a 49-year-old veteran of the San Francisco Police Department, suffered cuts to his hands, neck, face and leg in the 2:30 p.m. airport encounter. He was treated and released from a hospital, according to Officer Robert Rueca, a police spokesman.
The officer, whose name was not released, responded to reports of a suspicious person walking on the lower level roadway in front of Terminal 1. While the officer was searching the terminal’s baggage claim area, the suspect lunged at him with a knife, stabbing him in the leg, said airport spokesman Doug Yakel.
Although Johnston was identified as homeless, authorities said his last known address is in San Francisco.
Johnston was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City, where he is being held without bail.
