COLUMBUS, Ohio — With Halloween just three weeks away, the Columbus Police Department (CPD) and a local thrift shop are working to solve the mystery of how several CPD uniforms ended up at a Goodwill next to a selection of costumes.

ABC 6 reports a woman who visited the Goodwill store contacted them with concerns after seeing the CPD police uniforms intermingled with the costumes.

“I am not sure that is a really good idea,” shopper Reneat Fackler told the news platform. “I think you don’t want people impersonating the police. I don’t think that is the right thing to do.”

Goodwill reportedly disposed of the uniforms after they were made aware the uniforms were real and up for sale due to the customer complaint.

According to ABC 6, CPD Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts said there are processes to discard used police uniforms and is unsure why those precautions were not taken in this case.

“When a police officer turns in a uniform, the process is it is stripped down so someone just can’t get it,” Potts told ABC 6.

It is still unclear who donated the uniforms, but Goodwill told ABC 6 the uniforms were removed before they could be sold to customers.
