AURORA, Colo. — Aurora Interim Chief Art Acevedo told community members that he believes an audible and visible ‘Code 3’ response will reduce property crimes like vehicle break-ins.
Acevedo spoke with residents of Laredo Apartments about the recent recovery of a dozen stolen cars, CBS Denver reported.
Acevedo said that the lights and siren response will decrease response times, deter crimes in progress and highlight police presence: “It’s going to increase the visibility of the police department to make the criminal element a little more uncomfortable.”
Colorado reportedly leads the nation in auto thefts, according to CBS Denver. Acevedo has instructed officers to respond to more calls, such as vehicle break-ins, with lights and sirens.
Acevedo said criminals are doing more than going for a joyride. Most of the time, stolen cars are being stripped for parts. They are also often involved in secondary crimes, such as robberies and drive-by shootings.
“A lot of these criminals are not afraid of death. They’re not. You know what they do fear? Being incarcerated,” Acevedo told residents.
