Las Vegas police boost security for holidays

It’s not a first-of-its-kind request for the destination, but it’s getting extra emphasis this year

LAS VEGAS — Police want New Year’s Eve revelers in Las Vegas to leave bags, backpacks and strollers at home or in hotel rooms as authorities ready for hundreds of thousands of partiers filling the casino corridor.

It’s not a first-of-its-kind request for the destination, but it’s getting extra emphasis this year. Las Vegas police say nearly 1,000 uniformed officers will be visible along the 4-mile-long Strip and a few hundred will patrol downtown Fremont Street. Police won’t say how many additional undercover officers will be patrolling.

Officials expect 332,000 people to watch fireworks shoot from seven rooftops or celebrate below the Fremont Street video canopy.

There’s no legal ban on bags and strollers. Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo says the agency attempted to work with lawmakers to pass an ordinance prohibiting the items, but couldn’t do so in time.
