WASHINGTON — An FBI agent was involved in a shooting that wounded at least one person aboard a Metro train in Maryland early Tuesday, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear who was shot and what led to the incident, but officials said more details would be released as the investigation continues.

The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. on a Red Line train near the Medical Center station in Bethesda, just outside Washington, D.C., according to the FBI and Metro Transit Police.

“One individual was wounded and since transported to a local area hospital for medical assistance,” the FBI said in an emailed statement.

Metro trains bypassed the Medical Center station for more than two hours Tuesday morning as authorities investigated the shooting. The scene was cleared by 9:30 a.m., Metro said on Twitter.

The FBI said its Inspection Division would be in charge of the probe since an agent was involved with the shooting.

“The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents seriously,” the agency said.

“The review process is thorough and objective and is conducted as expeditiously as possible under the circumstances. As this remains an on-going matter, the FBI has no further comment.”
