BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Deputy Thomas Moore was released from Kern Medical Center Wednesday afternoon, four days after being severely injured from shotgun fire in McFarland, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Moore suffered injuries to his face, hands, arms, neck and left eye. He is scheduled for surgery on his left eye in the near future.

Moore and family requested privacy from media attention during his recovery. They are thankful for all the support they have received, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy was shot shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of 11th Street in McFarland. He was reporting to a house where a woman had been shot, and an armed suspect, Juan Valdez Jr., remained inside.

Valdez confronted Moore and shot him. Valdez later surrendered after more deputies arrived. Five children aged 6 to 13 were found uninjured inside the home. The injured woman was released from the hospital the same day as the shooting, deputies said.

Valdez remains booked on $1 million bail for attempted murder, and other felony charges. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8.
