MADRID — Spanish police say two officers have been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a tourist and that the one who was driving failed a blood-alcohol test.
A National Police statement issued Monday said the fatality in the Sunday morning accident was a 64-year-old German woman. She was hit by a car while cycling on the Mediterranean resort island of Mallorca and smashed into a tree.
The police officers, both males in their 30s, are detectives with the National Police and were off duty at the time of the accident.
The Civil Guard, a separate force, said the two were arrested shortly after leaving the scene.
A Civil Guard official in Mallorca said the driver had a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit. The official spoke anonymously in line with police rules.
