WATERTOWN, Wisconsin- A wanted by Mexican authorities for the murder of a police officer there was deported Tuesday, federal immigration officials said.
Hector Cepeda-Vargas, who was arrested March 13 in Wisconsin, was turned over to Mexican authorities after being flown to El Paso, Texas, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Gail Montenegro said.
Cepeda-Vargas admitted to entering the United States illegally and buying a fake birth certificate and Social Security card in Colorado, Montenegro said.
She said Mexican authorities first contacted the Chicago FBI office with information that Cepeda-Vargas was possibly residing in the Chicago area, she said.
The Madison, Wisconsin, FBI office, acting on a tip, later tracked him to the Watertown area, Montenegro said.
An arrest warrant issued in 2002 accuses Cepeda-Vargas of murdering police officer Magdaleno Avitia-Barraza in the Mexican state of Durango, the ICE spokeswoman said.
