BALTIMORE — The man fatally shot during a confrontation that also injured two police force officers in Baltimore Wednesday was wanted by authorities in Southeastern Pennsylvania after police said he fired shots at man following a dispute over his children.
The local officers were attempting to arrest Michael Marullo in Baltimore where he fled after he fired shots at the grandfather of his 2-year-old twins, according to court documents.
Two state law enforcement officials identified Marullo, 33, as the man shot and killed in the Baltimore shooting. A city and county police officer were also shot and injured. The two officials were not authorized to speak to the media.
Baltimore Police are leading the investigation into the shooting. Officials have not identified the officers involved, but said their injuries are non-life-threatening and that the city officer has been released from the hospital. The department also has not said who shot Marullo and the officers. Police said they recovered a gun from Marullo at the scene.
Lower Chichester Township Police in Pennsylvania, near the Delaware border, wrote in charging documents that on Tuesday, Marullo confronted the grandfather of his children outside a car detailing business in Lindwood, Pennsylvania.
Marullo questioned the man who had previously asked Marullo whether he hit his children during a phone call on Feb. 9, the documents said. The man told police Marullo did not respond to his questions and hung up the phone.
At the car detailing business, the man told police he told Marullo to leave and started to walk away, and continued to work detailing a car when he heard a gunshot. The man then ran, and then heard a second shot.
Police spoke to two other witnesses who told police they witnessed the shooting. Police said Marullo then fled the area in a Toyota.
Task force officers attempted to arrest Marullo shortly after noon on Wednesday in the 5900 block of Radecke Ave. They were assigned to the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman said. The service routinely deputizes officers from local agencies, including the city and counties, to arrest fugitives.
Marullo resigned last month as a Maryland corrections officer, officials said. The Baltimore Sun could not reach his family for comment.
