ABILENE, Texas — Authorities are treating the death of an off-duty officer found dead in his home as homicide, CNN reported.
Abilene Officer Don Allen was found dead Aug. 31 in his residence and the circumstances have been described as “clearly suspicious” by investigators.
“The circumstances behind his death indicate that the probable cause is homicide,” Chief Stan Standridge told CNN reporters.
Allen was the only person inside the home and was found by family members.
Standridge also stressed there has been no “indication right now that random law enforcement personnel are being targeted.”
“Why was Officer Allen chosen? That speaks volumes as it relates to how vulnerable are we. We look like we’re prepared for anything,” Standridge told CNN. “But the reality is, we’re just like you. We go to the same schools in this community. We attend the same churches. We eat at the same restaurants. We are just like you.”
No further details were released due to an ongoing investigation, but Standridge said the department is following numerous leads with help from the Texas Rangers and the FBI.
