NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Police have released dash cam video of a traffic stop in response to a man’s harassment claims.
CBS New York reports Officer Richard De La Cruz stopped 29-year-old Leonard Cephas for speeding and running a stop sign.
As the officer spoke with Cephas, he smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Cephas refused to step out of his vehicle after repeated requests from the De La Cruz. Cephas filmed the incident on cell phone camera as the officer pleaded with him for 30 minutes to exit his vehicle.
“I am scared right now for my life, because stuff are [sic] happening to black people, and I’m scared right now,” Cephas said on the recording, which was later uploaded to YouTube with claims of police harassment.
After the officer spoke with his supervisor and backup arrived, police broke open the driver’s side window and pulled Cephas from the vehicle.
Cephas told CBS New York the police had “no probable cause” and that “no pot” was found in the car.
Two bags of marijuana were found in the vehicle, according to police. Cephas was charged with driving under the influence and resisting arrest.
