PHILADELPHIA — A North Philadelphia youth who was listed as missing was found Saturday night after he pulled a gun on a cop during a chase and was wounded by the officer’s preemptive fire, police said.
The 16-year-old boy, who was hit in the shoulder, was treated at Temple University Hospital and released, Lt. Frank Vanore, police spokesman, said.
Officers from the 22nd District, along with members of the First Judicial District Warrant Team who were working together in Operation Pressure Point - a citywide effort to reduce crime - approached 10 males at Chadwick and Cumberland streets, in North Philadelphia, about 9:30 p.m., Vanore said.
When the cops went to question one of them, he ran off, police said. A 22nd District officer chased him, and on Bancroft Street near Allegheny Avenue the suspect allegedly pulled a 9mm handgun and pointed it at the officer.
The officer fired first, hitting the suspect in the right shoulder and causing him to drop his gun, Vanore said.
The youth, of Lambert Street near Susquehanna Avenue, was taken into custody, and when police ran a search on his name, he came up in the system as a missing juvenile, according to Vanore.
The handgun he produced, which police found at the scene, has been even harder to track.
“The weapon had an obliterated serial number,” Vanore said. “That will add more problems to his case. Obviously, he couldn’t own a weapon, and the weapon itself is illegal.”
The suspect, whose name was not released because of his age, was charged with aggravated assault on police, weapons violations and related offenses.
