PHILADELPHIA — A 16-year-old accused of smashing into a police car during a chase in Philadelphia, killing an officer, has been ordered to stand trial as an adult for murder.
Police say Andre Butler prompted the Sept. 5 chase by running a red light in a stolen sport utility vehicle and not stopping for officers. They say he ran more red lights and stop signs before crashing into the cruiser.
Forty-year-old Officer Isabel Nazario was killed in the crash and her partner suffered broken ribs and a broken hip.
Defense attorneys argued Wednesday that Nazario’s death was a tragic accident and that Butler should face a lesser charge of vehicular homicide. But prosecutors say Butler didn’t have a license and was speeding up to 75 mph, putting many lives in danger.
