COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Authorities say a teenage gunman in upstate New York chased a high school classmate into a police station, wounded him, and then shot himself in the chin.

The shooting happened at about 3 p.m. Friday in a station next to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Police say the 16-year-old gunman was hospitalized with a serious wound. The other teen, also 16, was hit in the arm. He was treated and released.

Authorities say it began when the gunman got out of a car with a rifle and began chasing a group of youths who had been walking near the Hall of Fame Library.

One ran into the police station’s foyer and was shot after he sought cover behind a pillar.

Police say the gunman then shot himself when the officer ordered him to drop his weapon.
