ATLANTA — Sworn peace officers in Georgia would not have to pay state income taxes under a new bill proposed Wednesday, according to The Georgia Virtue.
House Bill 992 calls for full exemption for law enforcement from state income tax. One of the lawmakers sponsoring the legislations is State Rep. Bill Hitchens, a former colonel of the Georgia State Patrol. Hitchens’ son is currently second-in-command of the agency.
The move comes after a similar bill was proposed in Kentucky as a way to incentivize more officers to work in the state.
The Georgia bill is sponsored by State Representatives Rick Williams, Bill Hitchens, Matthew Gambill, Alan Powell, and Stan Gunter, according to the report. If passed, it would take effect in 2023.
