ATLANTA — A police officer is being called a hero after saving a woman from jumping from an overpass.

Officer Lisa McGhaw said she saw the woman “and immediately just jumped in and offered assistance,” according to WFMY.

“I made a conscious decision to go over the ledge,” McGhaw said. “She was apprehensive at first but after a while of speaking with her, I was able to close enough with her and attempt to build a rapport.”

McGhaw used knowledge gained from Crisis Intervention Training and spent an hour on the ledge with the woman.

“It was clear to me that she was desperate,” McGhaw said. “The ledge did not intimidate me. The sole thought process was to get her to safety.”

After the woman reached a breakthrough, McGhaw said the two came up with an exit strategy and stood up as SWAT members pulled the woman over the ledge.

“I’m not a hero. I’m just a patrol officer with the city of Atlanta doing my job as required. I just happen to feel that my presence was needed at the scene at that time.”
