CHICAGO — A south suburban man has been charged with attempted murder after police said he shot an off-duty Chicago police officer and her daughter during an argument Tuesday night.
Anthony Gates, 28, of suburban Riverdale, has been charged with two felony counts of attempted first degree murder and two felony counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to a statement from Chicago police.
About 10 p.m. Tuesday, the officer was outside her daughter’s home in the 2200 block of East 68th Street when Gates, the daughter’s former boyfriend, approached and started arguing, according to police.
Gates pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking the officer several times in the face, neck and both arms and hitting the daughter in the thigh, police said.
Gates then fled in a black Impala with the couple’s 2-year-old son. He was arrested about three hours later near the Frances Cabrini homes on the Near North Side, and the boy was found unharmed, police said.
The officer, a 24-year veteran, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and was later stabilized, authorities said. Her daughter was also taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and her condition was also stabilized.
Police said Gates, of the 13600 block of South Eggleston Avenue in Riverdale, is scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday afternoon.
