SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — The 38-year-old man fatally shot in a hunting accident Tuesday was a Hamburg police officer, the Sussex County prosecutor’s office said.
Jason Franco was hunting deer with a family member in Wantage when he was struck by a single round from a shotgun, First Assistant Prosecutor Gregory Mueller said.
Franco was pronounced dead at the scene around 12:30 p.m.
No foul play is suspected, Mueller told NJ Advance Media.
“The investigation appears to suggest this was just a tragic accident,” Mueller said.
The name of the family member was not disclosed.
Franco joined the Hamburg police department in April 2018.
