DALLAS — Kaufman County sheriff’s deputies are investigating an officer-involved shooting that wounded a man on a highway outside Forney.
The man was shot in a confrontation with an off-duty Forney officer about 9:30 p.m. Sunday on FM 741, just north of Interstate 20.
He was hit multiple times and airlifted to Methodist Dallas Medical Center. The officer was not injured, sheriff’s Capt. Fred Klingelberger tells inforney.com.
The details of what led up to the shooting have yet to be released, but a man who identified himself as the victim’s father said the shooting was unjustified.
Benny Wesberry told KXAS-TV that the officer pulled over in a pickup as Wesberry tried to calm his son, who had been drinking and was agitated. That’s when his son started beating on the pickup’s window, telling the officer to leave.
He said his son was shot five times while Wesberry was trying to restrain him.
“I had control of him. I was pulling him backward,” he said. “I already had him under control.”
