LOXLEY, Ala. — An officer with the Loxley Police Department died Monday after crashing his cruiser into a tree.

WKRG reports 57-year-old Sgt. Charles Kerry Mitchum was on his way to a sheriff’s office firing range and training center when he lost control of his vehicle.

Mitchum’s crash is believed to have been caused by a medical emergency, but no further details have been released. He was airlifted to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Mitchum won an ‘Officer of the Year’ award for his work on the force in 2011, according to the report.
