OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. — An Oklahoma County deputy injured over a week ago after a metal gate went through the windshield of his patrol car during a crash has died, according to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.

On March 10, deputy Jeremy McCain was injured after a metal gate went through the windshield of his patrol car after working a basketball game at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond. McCain was taken to OU Medical Center, where he underwent surgery after suffering life-threatening injuries, KOCO reported.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we have to share with you that Deputy Jeremy McCain has passed after a valiant fight for his life. Jeremy was critically hurt in an accident March 10,” Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office posted to social media.

Oklahoma Christian School officials released the following statement:

“Deputy Jeremy McCain faithfully served the Oklahoma Christian School community. He was professional and carried out his duties as a school resource officer with great care. Deputy McCain was one of the most well-loved people on our campus. He knew every child by name and made personal connections with many of them. He was a constant source of joy and enthusiasm. Every morning he greeted elementary students as they left their cars with a huge smile and an exuberant greeting. This is heartbreaking for OCS, as Deputy McCain made deep friendships across our campus. The loss of Deputy McCain is already being felt deeply among our community.”
