CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — A sheriff’s deputy was killed in a crash after his patrol car collided with a tractor-trailer Thursday night.
Deputy Curtis Allen Bartlett, 32, was in pursuit of a suspect when he collided with the tractor-trailer while making a left turn, WTVR reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Police told WDBJ that another deputy and trooper detained the two fleeing suspects a short while later.
Before joining the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in 2013, Bartlett served in the U.S. Army. He also served as a school resource officer, WDBJ reported. Bartlett was a K-9 handler as well.
“His loss is being felt by everyone within his ‘family’ at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and our neighboring police agencies in Galax and Hillsville and the state police,” Sheriff J.B. Gardner said in a statement.
Bartlett is survived by his parents and four siblings, Mount Airy News reported.
