Widow of fallen deputy fights for ballistic glass in squads

In honor of her husband who was fatally shot through his windshield, she’s petitioning for ballistic glass in all patrol cars

SPANISH FORK, Utah — The wife of an officer who was fatally wounded in January when he was shot through his windshield is on a mission to ensure all patrol cars in the future are equipped with ballistic glass in his honor.

When Nan Wride saw the overwhelming number of officers in attendance for her late husband Cory Wride’s funeral, she decided to make it her mission to protect the rest of them.

“I said, ‘Not one more can die.’ They shouldn’t have their stomach turn every time they come up on a car to help someone,” Wride told KUTV.

Wride and her family are petitioning the White House to draw attention to the cause, and have contacted officers, lawmakers, and the governor for support.

Utah County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Wride died January 29 of two gunshot wounds. Another officer, Greg Sherwood, was also shot through the windshield by the gunman but survived.

The gunman, identified as Jose Angel Garcia-Juaregui, also died of injuries sustained in a gunfight with police, leaving his motive for the crime spree a mystery.

Anyone interested in reading or signing the petition can see it here.
