DURHAM A Hampstead man faces numerous charges after he allegedly punched a state trooper in the face after she stopped him for suspected drunk driving.

Christopher St. Onge, 22, is charged with felony escape, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, DWI, transportation of alcoholic beverages and other motor vehicle charges, according to a news release.

State police said Trooper Michelle Montville stopped a vehicle on Main Street after it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday.

After a field sobriety test, Montville informed the driver she was arresting him for DWI. He punched her in the face and the two exchanged blows before St. Onge fled, police said.

State troopers and officers from Durham and University of New Hampshire police searched overnight for St. Onge. He turned himself in to authorities in Exeter Saturday morning, police said.

Trooper Montville was treated by Durham EMTs at the scene, and “is doing well considering the assault against her,” according to the release.
