LOS ANGELES — An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was shot and killed during an armed robbery attempt Monday night in an unincorporated area of South L.A., authorities said.
The L.A. police officers union issued a statement shortly after midnight saying that the officer had died. The officer's name was not disclosed.
"The officer was off-duty," the Los Angeles Police Protective League tweeted. "We pray for the officer's family, and their fellow officers, during this time of pain and sorrow. This is an active investigation."
The shooting occurred at 9:16 p.m. in the 8700 block of Beach Street in Florence-Firestone, said Deputy Tracy Koerner, a spokesman for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies took the officer to a hospital, Koerner said.
