ELYRIA, Ohio — A Lorain County grand jury has handed up an indictment against an Elyria man who bit part of a State Highway Patrol trooper’s ear off while attacking him.
Cornelius Carey Jr. is charged with felonious assault, three counts of kidnapping, obstructing official business and resisting arrest, court records say.
He is currently in Lorain County Jail on a $1 million bond.
The scuffle happened about 7:15 a.m. Jan. 11 on Diagonal Road just north of Biggs Road, Highway Patrol said.
Prosecutors requested Carey undergo tests for communicable diseases, court records say. Bennett received the lab results Thursday, but they are confidential and can not be shared or released for any reason, court records say.
A woman discovered Carey in the middle of the road and he appeared drunk. She called the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and said she was afraid he would get hit by a car.
State trooper Lance Deshuk found Carey wandering in the street. Carey got confrontational and struck Deshuk in the face.
Another woman called the Sheriff’s Office and said she saw Carey and Deshuk wrestling in the middle of the road.
Backup arrived several minutes later to help the trooper.
A third caller said Carey put Deshuk in a choke hold, but Deshuk later got him under control and in handcuffs, according to the 911 call.
