OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — An Oklahoma City police officer suffered injuries to his head Tuesday when a man took his baton during a chase and beat him with it, police said.
Officers responded shortly after 2 p.m. to a reported burglary near NW 12 and May Avenue.
Two officers encountered a suspect, Jermaine Williams, 26, walking south on Ross Avenue, police reported. As the officers got out of their vehicle to confront him, Williams fled on foot, police said.
A rookie officer caught up with Williams and tried to take him down but was overpowered, Capt. Paco Balderrama said. The man took the officer’s baton and hit him over the head with it several times before running away.
The injured officer got up and continued chasing the man, and officers were able to get him into custody.
Jermaine Williams’ brother, Tremaine Williams, 26, also a suspect in the burglary, was found inside a house near Park Place and N Ross Avenue. Officers surrounded the house, and he eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
Balderrama said the officer is in serious condition at OU Medical Center.
Police have not released the name of the injured officer.
Jermaine Williams was booked on complaints of aggravated assault and battery against a police officer, assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, second-degree burglary and concealing stolen property, police said.
Tremaine Williams faces complaints of second-degree burglary and concealing stolen property.
