AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin police officer who was injured while escorting a funeral procession Thursday has “taken a turn for the worse” and is in critical condition, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said on Twitter.
A driver was trying to cut through the funeral procession and turned illegally in front of the officer, causing the officer to strike the side of that vehicle, Austin police Sgt. Andy Westbrook said. The crash is still under investigation, so any information regarding charges has not yet been released.
Our motor officer has taken a turn for the worse & is in very critical condition. Please pray for him, his family & his APD family.

The officer has been with the Austin Police Department for at least 15 years, Westbrook said.
“He’s an amazing officer,” Westbrook said.
