SALEM, Ore. — A Salem police officer was shot multiple times during a traffic stop Tuesday night, and the suspect was arrested Wednesday morning after a lengthy search.

Police in Salem surrounded an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Broadway Street Northeast, and SWAT officers later used an explosive device to blow the door off a unit where investigators believed Jaime L. Jimenez had been holed up, according to the police department. Jimenez, 38, of Woodburn was in custody by about 8:45 a.m.

He faces accusations of attempted aggravated murder, second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. A second person in the apartment, Amanda Cayetano, 35, of Salem, also was arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution.

The officer, who has since been released from a hospital, hasn’t yet been publicly identified by police.

The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday during a stop in the 500 block of Highland Avenue Northeast. The suspect then drove away, according to police.

The car was found unoccupied shortly after, police said. The shooter remained on the loose until Wednesday morning despite more than four hours of canine searching, according to police.

The shooting prompted the Wednesday closure of Highland Elementary School, which is near the shooting scene.
