NEWARK, NJ —Two Newark cops were injured after a man they questioned at a drug stop dragged them with his car, according to authorities.
The incident, caught on the officers’ body cameras, took place when the cops checked on a call about a sick man at 2:13 a.m. Saturday, according to a press release from Newark’s Department of Public Safety.
The officers found Jacob Wolski, 30, in his car, appearing to use drugs. When the officers attempted to question him, and instructed him to exit the vehicle, the video shows, Wolski drove off, dragging the officers with him.
One officer’s hand was injured during the incident while the other sustained a minor head injury. Both were brought to the hospital and subsequently released.
Prior to the incident, the cops recorded his license plate and notified other agencies. Edison police then arrested Wolski, charging him with possession of a controlled substance. Marlboro police took over from there as they had already issued a warrant for his arrest.
Wolski was also charged by Newark authorities with two counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and eluding, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of heroin, according to the release.
He is currently being held at the Monmouth County jail on charges of contempt – disobedience and resistance of court command, according to online records.
“We will not tolerate people coming into this city to buy drugs,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement. “We especially won’t tolerate them injuring or disrespecting our police. If we do, we will track them as quickly and as efficiently as we found this Monmouth County suspect.”
The Edison, Newark, and Marlboro Police Departments were unavailable for immediate comments.
