CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man suspected of shooting a North Carolina deputy on Sunday was killed during a standoff with SWAT officers, police said.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect was killed after a SWAT team went into a home Tuesday, the Charlotte Observer reported. Officials said officers entered the home and located the suspect, who shot at police.

The officers returned fire, striking and killing the man. Details about what led officers to the home were not released.

On Sunday, Caldwell County Deputy Jordan Sherrill, 21, was approaching a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop when he was shot below his body armor. The deputy was flown to a hospital where he is listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Police were searching for an early 1990s blue Toyota Corolla after the shooting and described the suspect as a white male and the passenger as a white female. Following the standoff, police arrested Stephanie Sipes, who was also in the home.

Sipes is charged with accessory after the fact of the attempted murder of Sherrill.

Sherrill is expected to make a full recovery.
