CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati officials plan to discuss new leadership roles and developing police reforms in the aftermath of an officer’s fatal shooting of a man he stopped over a missing front license plate.
The school has appointed a veteran Cincinnati assistant police chief, James Whalen, to serve as director of public safety. The school also named a director of police community relations, after earlier appointing Robin Engel as vice president for safety and reform.
A press conference is scheduled Monday.
The moves come after since-fired UC Officer Ray Tensing’s July 19 shooting of Samuel DuBose. He has pleaded not guilty.
At a commencement ceremony Saturday, president Santa Ono called for a moment of silence for DuBose. He pledged the university will take action to prevent another such tragedy.
