Reading, Pa. — A Berks County sheriff’s office employee was injured Wednesday afternoon by the accidental discharge of an issued weapon at the Berks County Services Center in Reading, according to officials.

Crews were dispatched about 1:30 p.m. to the basement of the Berks County Courthouse for the report of a shooting.

The incident drew a large response from police.

Officials in the Berks County sheriff’s office said that the employee, who was not identified, suffered a gunshot wound after a weapon accidentally discharged.

The employee was taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital and was in good condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Several county employees at the scene said a female deputy suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to her abdomen in the cellblock area.

The Reading Police Department assisted deputies after the incident, officials said, and the Berks County district attorney’s office is investigating.
