Tenn. officer fires on, but misses, robbery suspect

Knoxville News Sentinel

No one was struck when a Knoxville Police Department officer fired his service weapon Sunday afternoon after an armed robbery suspect turned on him with a loaded weapon.

The robbery was reported at the Family Dollar, 2604 Magnolia Ave., at 4 p.m. Officer John Stevens responded from a block away and arrived to witness the suspect, Kendrick Burrows, holding a gun on an employee, according to KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk. “The suspect turned on the officer with the hammer already cocked on his fully loaded .22-caliber revolver,” DeBusk said in a written statement. “The suspect’s action forced the officer to fire his weapon in defense of his life and the lives of the victims.”

Burrows, 19, then dropped the weapon and fled through a back door, DeBusk said.

Burrows soon crashed a Pontiac he apparently had left in the rear alley and, after a brief foot pursuit, was taken into custody by police on the 2400 block of Jefferson Avenue, DeBusk said.

Burrows was charged Sunday evening with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, felony fleeing, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.

He suffered an injury to his hand that DeBusk said was most likely sustained during the car crash. No other injuries were reported.
