Video: SC cop shoots suspect fleeing in car, officials investigating

Police later found two weapons and drugs in the vehicle

COLUMBIA, S.C. — An investigation is underway after an officer fired seven shots at a suspect attempting to flee in a vehicle.

According to NBC News, Officer Robert Cooper responded to the scene May 19 after 17-year-old Antwon Gallmon fled from officers who were investigating a report of loud music coming from a dead-end street.

Cooper, who was on foot, commanded Gallmon to stop his vehicle. As Gallmon accelerated, Cooper fired seven shots at the vehicle – striking Gallmon once.

In the video, Cooper can be heard telling dispatch he was nearly hit by the vehicle. He suffered no injuries in the incident.

Gallmon survived the shooting and is out on bond. Police later found two weapons and drugs in the vehicle. The Charlotte Observer reported Gallmon is charged with failure to stop for blue lights, possession of a stolen vehicle, two counts of unlawful possession of a pistol, simple possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of a Schedule 1 drug, and driving without a license.

The officer has been suspended with pay as officials investigate the shooting.
