OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A California man allegedly broke a police officer’s windshield with a machete in an “unprovoked” attack Tuesday, then stabbed a police dog during his arrest, according to officials.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, got into a “confrontation” with the Oceanside Police Department officer around 5 p.m. Tuesday and used his machete to break the cop car’s windshield, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Glass from the windshield flew into the officer’s face and eyes, injuring him, and the suspect fled the scene.

The officer was hospitalized with “minor injuries” but is expected to be OK.

The suspect was apprehended during a manhunt with assistance from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, but not before he allegedly stabbed a K-9 during his capture, according to the Union-Tribune.

The dog was taken to the veterinarian but its condition is unclear.
