CROWN POINT, Ind. — A fugitive accused of fatally stabbing his estranged second wife in suburban Chicago was arrested in northwestern Indiana on Tuesday, more than a decade after he spent time in prison for trying to kill his first wife, authorities said.

Clarence J. Weber, 58, was taken into custody in Lake County after police received calls from people who saw him walking along a road, said Mike Higgins, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

He is accused of stabbing Adelina Weber, 31, on Saturday in the parking lot of a hotel outside the Lincolnshire, Ill., pancake house where she was a waitress. She walked into the hotel lobby with a stab wound and died.

She had obtained a court order of protection against her husband May 5. Two days later, a fire destroyed the couple’s home in Waukegan, Ill., and police are investigating the case as a suspected arson. She filed for divorce on July 1 and was dead four days later.

Police had been searching for Clarence Weber since, including with a helicopter and dogs. Authorities say he abandoned a car at a northwestern Indiana truck stop Monday afternoon after police surrounded the area.

When arrested, he was walking home to Waukegan, a northern suburb of Chicago more than an hour’s drive from Crown Point, Higgins said.

He is being held Tuesday at the Lake County jail and has an extradition hearing set for the next morning. It was not immediately clear Tuesday whether he had an attorney.

Florida records show Clarence Weber spent six years in prison there from 1989 to 1995 after he was convicted of attempting to murder his first wife.

He also was convicted of kidnapping his 8-year-old daughter, aggravated assault, battery of a law enforcement official, arson, burglary, grand theft and resisting arrest.
