ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A SWAT team has lobbed 17 canisters of tear gas into the home of man who is suspected of shooting a 26-year-old Orange City police officer this morning and may be involved in the death of another man found dead in a Deltona bar this afternoon.
Deputies are trying to flush out Bryan Langford, co-owner of Dixies Pub on Howland Boulvard, where the body of a man was found earlier today. That death is believed to be linked to the shooting of Orange City police officer Sherif El-Shami, who was was hit by gunfire as he arrived at the house where Langford lives on University Avenue about 10:45 a.m., said Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson. At least four shots were fired, he said, and at least one window of El-Shami’s cruiser had a bullet hole. It’s unclear how many bullets struck El-Shami.
“I’m hit! I’m hit,” El-Shami told the dispatcher.
El-Shami managed to back away from the house and was immediately taken to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City by another officer on the scene. El-Shami did not see who shot him, Johnson said, nor whether shots came from the house or the wooded area that surrounds it.
