This week’s photo comes from the Baytown Police Department in Baytown, Texas.

Last month, Lt. Chris McDonald and Officer Nathan Gallop, Crisis Negotiator Team Leader, visited with incoming freshmen at a local tech high school. Lt. McDonald spoke about how the career center offers training in many fields that directly relate to employment in the Baytown Police Department:

  • The Law Enforcement Program, led by former BPD Officer Steve Denton, prepares students for a career as a peace officer.
  • The Automotive Career Academy can prepare students to work as a mechanic for the police department by maintaining a variety of 200 vehicles.
  • The Information Technology Career Academy can prepare a student for a career in designing and maintaining the many computer systems used inside and outside the police department.

Students were shown the mobile command center and a new police patrol vehicle. Each vehicle is networked with cellular LTE, making them mobile offices. City of Baytown Network Administrator Bill McFarlane, Police Systems Administrator Richard Hartis and Radio Technician Gilbert Garcia each discussed how their work as IT professionals supports the police department.
