JUAREZ, Mexico — More than a dozen people have been killed, including three Chihuahua state police investigators, in a spike in violence today in Juarez, a state police official said tonight.
The investigators were shot to death in a vehicle this afternoon. There were news reports that a city police officer was killed in a separate shooting this evening.
There were other homicides throughout the day starting with a unidentified man found stabbed to death at about 8 a.m.
The increase in violence comes as Juarez Competitiva kicks off tonight with a concert by the Mexican rock band Manc at Benito Juarez Olympic Stadium expected to attract 30,000 people.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday for Juarez Competiva, a series of events intended to repair the city’s battered image.
