VACAVILLE, Calif. — Three brothers are now out of the foster care system thanks to a California police officer.

Three years ago, Vacaville PD officer Isaac Stevens responded to an apartment complex after a woman reported that one of her sons went missing. Stevens, who was a rookie officer at the time, did a welfare check on the apartment and reported it as “filthy,” according to KTVU.com.

“I was shocked that kids were living in conditions like this,” Stevens said. The boys, who were 2, 4 and 8 years old at the time, had been left with no adult supervision.

After the incident, the boys went to live with distant relatives, James and Mae Lancaster, of their biological mother. “They actually met me here at the police department outside those steps in the middle of the night after the initial call for service,” Stevens said.

And just last week, the boys were formally adopted by the Lancaster family — an event Stevens was invited to attend.

“It was something I couldn’t imagine three years later,” Stevens said.
