Calling all police poets! Police1’s poetry column highlights some of the inspirational, moving and funny poems authored by our readers.

Central City (Arkansas) Police Chief Daymon Blount has spent more than 35 years in law enforcement. A longtime musician as well as a cop, he wrote “Heart Behind the Badge” as a personal tribute to the officers who quietly shoulder those burdens. He’s read it at academy graduations, and it now hangs in his department as a reminder of the heart that carries the badge.

Heart Behind the Badge

He’s the one with the true desire to help someone in need.
She’s the one to ignore her own danger, to stop another’s bleed.
They’re the ones to miss the special family times, while standing on the side of the road, listening to someone screaming lies.

They’re the Heart Behind the Badge…

She’s the one you call for help, when you think danger is near.
He’s the one who handles the “bad guys” and tells you not to fear.
They’re the ones who pledge to protect you, so you can have a peaceful sleep.
Even though they haven’t slept but they still have that pledge to keep.

They’re the Heart Behind the Badge…

He’s the one who sees things that people could never imagine.
She’s the one who is screamed at and spit on by someone who wants to claim their “rights.”
They’re the ones who sacrifice everything of their own to protect their public every day and every night.

They’re the Heart Behind the Badge…

He’s the one who tries to keep it all in and be normal, right up to the very last.
She’s the one who is an expert to hide what she’s dealt with in the past.
They’re the ones who would ultimately sacrifice their own lives for that of another.
Even though in their own lives, they too are a FATHER or MOTHER.

They’re the Heart Behind the Badge…

Daymon Blount, 2023
