FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — An off-duty Fulton County Sheriff’s deputy’s gun discharged, and a man sustained a gunshot to his foot, in a struggle Friday afternoon during an arrest attempt, authorities said.
The wounded man, Daniel Taylor, 43, will be charged with aggravated assault and felony obstruction of a police officer for resisting arrest, Atlanta police said.
The sheriff’s deputy, a courtesy officer at the M-Street Apartments at 950 Marietta St., Atlanta, responded to a domestic call at one of the units shortly after 2:30 p.m., police said.
When the officer entered the apartment to confront the man in the incident, the man resisted arrest, police said. During the struggle, the man allegedly went for the officer’s gun. A shot was fired and hit the suspect in the foot.
The officer’s arm was broken, and he had several cuts and bruises on his head, police said. Both men were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.
Atlanta police and the sheriff’s Internal Affairs Department is investigating the incident. Sheriff’s Sgt. Nikita Hightower said the deputy remains on duty.
