Take Time to Observe

As a police officer for a major railroad, I work alone 90 percent of the time. When investigating suspicious activity or persons, before I go charging in I try to observe them and their activity from different vantage points, unseen, to see what they are doing, how many suspects there are, whether they might be armed and so on. Unless it calls for immediate action, take a few moments and see “what’s up,” especially if you’re alone and cannot get backup quickly or are in a location that cannot be easily found by other responders.
