EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A 30-year-old man who assaulted a public safety officer died Monday night after being shot by TASERs as police tried to arrest him, police said. The TASERs have not been confirmed as contributing to the man’s death.
East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety officers were called to a domestic disturbance at 2110 Heather St. SE at 9:05 p.m. Monday. Outside the home, Matthew Bolick confronted one of the officers and assaulted him, police said.
The officer responded by shooting Bolick with a TASER, which had no apparent effect, police said. Bolick then ran into the house, with officers pursuing him. After a struggle inside and additional shots from TASERs, Bolick was arrested, police said. Grand Rapids Police officers, who had been called for assistance, arrived soon after. A press release from the East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety states: “Following his arrest, Mr. Bolick died at the scene.”
According to another article by the Grand Rapids Press, it was the first time any officer in the department had used one of the TASERs, which were purchased in January.
