NEW YORK — Members of the New York Police Department are among the select few applicants chosen to beta-test Google Glass for surveillance purposes.
The law enforcement agency’s intelligence and analytics unit unofficially announced that they were testing the specs, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“We signed up, got a few pairs of the Google glasses, and we’re trying them out, seeing if they have any value in investigations, mostly for patrol purposes,” a New York City law enforcement official told VentureBeat.
The high-tech glasses are only available through the Google Glass Explorer Program, an application process which requires the applicants to be at least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen, according to Google.
On-demand photo and video and wireless facial recognition software are just some of the features that could potentially attract law enforcement to the new wearable technology.
